How to connect an Ipod to your home stereo
Posted on: September 1, 2011
Little is easier than playing an mp3 player or and Ipod through your home stereo. Today's ipod with their huge capacity are an excellent match for a powerful home stereo receiver. Don't forget to check into the resource box at the bottom of this page which links to my illustrated page which not only shows you which adapter you'll need, but also walks you through this simple procedure.
Other than an iPod and a home stereo system that has some sort of auxiliary input, you are going to need an adapter that will take the signal from the headphone port on your iPod and split it into a stereo signal, right and left which you can then connect to the inputs on your home stereo.
If you have a smaller shelf type stereo system, you may be limited in your choices about which input you use. Some small shelf systems may not have an auxiliary input at all. On these shelf type systems, look for a button on the front that says "aux". If there is such a button, simply plug your adapter into the "aux" jacks on the back of the stereo and choose the corresponding button on the front panel. Remember that you now have two volume controls. If you don't have the volume you think you should then make sure you don't have it turned too far down, either on your mp3 player or on the stereo. With a home stereo receiver, you will have more options when it comes to which input you use. I'm not too picky as they all tend to work fine. I just pick an input that I'm not using or I don't use too much. At this point I am using the "tape/md" input on my stereo for the iPod. I haven't used a tape player on my system in years and it's probably going to stay that way. For my illustrated page on this project please visit
